Rest
The ambitious workaholic struggles with rest just as much as the lazy couch-dweller—they are simply extreme opposites of one another. When an individual exerts significant amounts of energy over a prolonged period, this individual is expected to have sufficient fuel to sustain that energy. But relentless exertion without recovery leads inevitably to depletion. Your flame cannot burn indefinitely on the same materials. It needs oxygen, space to breathe, time to integrate the fuel it has consumed.
Consider your internal flame: it requires both materials and air. Feed it constantly without pause, and you smother it. The workaholic who never rests is not maximizing productivity—they are strangling their own fire. True sustainability comes from the rhythm of burning and resting, not from attempting to burn at maximum intensity without cease.
"The mind should be allowed some relaxation, that it may return to its work all the better for rest." — Seneca
"What does rest mean to you, and is that actually restful?"
