Rhythm
Before clocks, people moved by rhythm. The rhythm of light and dark, of planting and harvest, of season turning into season. These were not inconveniences to override but information to follow. The world was telling you something. People, mostly, listened.
We have largely stopped listening.
Not because we became more sophisticated, but because we became more afraid. Afraid of rest, because rest looks like falling behind. Afraid of winter, because winter looks like failure. Afraid of the low tide, because we have confused the tide's recession with our own.
"Where are you fighting your own natural rhythms — in sleep, in energy, in the phases of a project or relationship — and what would it mean to stop fighting?"
