Gratitude

Gratitude is easy to dismiss. It sounds like something printed on calendars, sold in courses, performed in thirty-second videos with warm lighting and acoustic guitar. Say what you are thankful for and feel better. The prescription seems too simple for the complexity of a human life.

But genuine gratitude—which bears little resemblance to its performed version—is one of the quietest forms of power available to you.

Most attention moves toward what is wrong. The problem unsolved, the plan that failed, the gap between where you are and where you imagined you would be. This is not a character flaw—it is a feature of the human mind, shaped over millennia to scan for what is missing because what is missing was historically more dangerous than what is present. The result is that we live surrounded by things we have not acknowledged. Health that functions without our attention. A friendship that held when it was tested. A mind capable of asking the questions it now asks.
