Equanimity
Equanimity is mental calmness and evenness of temper, especially in difficult situations. It is the ability to remain composed when chaos surrounds you, to maintain inner peace when external circumstances would justify panic, to respond thoughtfully when reactive emotion would be easier.
Equanimity is not apathy. It is not pretending you do not care or suppressing your feelings. It is the practice of observing your emotions without being controlled by them, of acknowledging difficulty without being consumed by it, of experiencing pain without adding unnecessary suffering through resistance.
Think of a lake. When the surface is still, it reflects the sky perfectly. When wind disturbs the water, the reflection becomes distorted. Your mind is the same. When you maintain equanimity, you see clearly. When you allow every external event to disturb your inner state, your perception becomes clouded.
