Lesson · Word 12
Envy
Envy is the emotion we most consistently lie about.
Other uncomfortable feelings get acknowledged eventually. Anger admitted, sadness expressed, fear confessed. But envy lingers in private, dressed as other things. Criticism. Disinterest. Sudden expertise in why what someone else has is not actually that good. The elaborate rationalization that what they achieved is not really what you would have wanted anyway.
This is not deception of others. It is the far more expensive kind: self-deception.
"What envy are you disguising as criticism, disinterest, or rationalization — and what does that feeling actually tell you about what you want?"
